I’m not yet comfortable with the word, its short clean woosh that sounds likelife. At dinner last night my single girlssaid in admonition, It’s not wife-approvedabout a friend’s upcoming trip. Theireyes rolled up and over and out theirpretty young heads. Wife, why does itsound like a job? I want a wife, the famousfeminist wrote, a wife who will keep myclothes clean, ironed, mended, replacedwhen need be. A word that could be madeeasily into maid. A wife that does, fixes, soothes, honors, obeys. Housewife, fishwife, bad wife, good wife, what’sthe word for someone who stares longinto the morning, unable to even fix teasome days, the kettle steaming overloud like a train whistle, she who criesin the mornings, she who tears a holein the earth and cannot stop grieving, the one who wants to love you, but oftenisn’t good at even that, the one whodoesn’t want to be diminishedby how much she wants to be yours.Ada Limón
